Now under new ownership, the former Brookwood Inn on Elba Street near Duke University’s campus in Durham has completed its conversion into a Cambria-branded hotel.
Renovations took more than a year to finish and cost $8 million.
The 146-room hotel built in the late 1980s at 2306 Elba St. had been acquired in late 2015 by a partnership led by Raleigh-based Concord Hospitality Enterprisesand Florida-based Robert Finvarb Companies for $10.2 million.
The like-new hotel has added an on-site restaurant with a menu of local specialties, liquor, wine, and local craft beers and a barista. All of the furniture and décor has been upgraded and free Wi-Fi added for guests. Davidson & Jones Construction Co. of Raleigh was the general contractor.
As the Brookwood Inn, room rates averaged $89-$109 per night. Under the new Cambria hotel & suites flag, room rates range from $99-$179 per night.
Cambria hotel & suites is owned by Choice Hotels International Inc. (NYSE: CHH), which has been seeking to expand the brand into more urban markets across the country. It also has a Cambria-branded hotel near Raleigh-Durham International Airport at 300 Airgate Drive in Morrisville.
“We have had great success with this brand, and the Cambria Duke-Durham Medical Center Area will be our fourth Cambria opening, with more Cambria properties in development,” said Mark Laport, Concord’s president and CEO in a statement about the project. “Cambria hotels & suites provides amenities well suited for guests traveling on business and leisure, and we feel that value is augmented by the location advantages of the hotel.”
Concord also developed the Residence Inn by Marriott on Main Street in Durham that opened in 2015 and recently opened its first AC Hotel at North Hills in Raleigh.
